Trillium Alpine Guides is partnering with Mountain Shop to offer free rental equipment for every participant who signs up for this Intro to Backcountry course, giving you access to high quality touring gear for the entire day at no extra cost.

Rental Info

Mountain Shop will provide each participant with a free rental package that includes:

  • Backcountry skis or a splitboard

  • Skins

  • Boots

  • Poles

  • Beacon, probe, and shovel

Each participant must pick up their free rental package from Mountain Shop the day before the course, January 7th, and return their rental gear the day after the course, January 9th. If you would like to pick up your rentals earlier or return them later, you are welcome to do so, but an additional rental fee will apply.

Course Overview

Intro to Backcountry is our entry level program for skiers and riders who have solid resort experience and want to explore beyond the ski area. This day is designed to give you the skills and confidence to begin traveling in simple backcountry terrain with good habits and strong fundamentals.

The focus of the course is learning how to prepare for a backcountry day, travel efficiently, use your equipment, and move through the landscape with awareness and good decision making. Our guides create a supportive learning environment with plenty of practice and coaching throughout the day.

Skills covered

  1. Basic use of avalanche safety equipment

  2. Partner avalanche rescue

  3. Skinning techniques for efficient uphill travel

  4. Uphill turns and kick turns

  5. Smooth and efficient transitions

  6. Descending in variable snow and natural terrain

  7. Communication and group travel

  8. Hazard identification and terrain management

  9. Backcountry self care and energy management

Next Steps

After completing this course, we recommend that participants take their new skills into simple terrain without avalanche hazard. We will help you identify suitable practice zones. When you are ready to build on your skills and dive deeper into terrain, snowpack, and decision making, join us for Level II Decision Making for Avalanche Terrain.
