Mountaineering Gear
We proudly partner with Portland Mountain Shop for retail and rental gear. Program participants receive a 20% discount on all Black Diamond retail items and a 30% discount on rental gear. Portland Mountain Shop stocks climbing helmets, mountaineering boots, crampons, and ice axes for rent, along with backcountry skis, splitboards, skins, poles, and backcountry ski and snowboard boots. Avalanche safety gear is also available for rent.
Clothing:
Underwear – Wool or synthetic.
Socks – Wool or synthetic.
Long Underwear – Light to medium weight bottoms.
Sun Shirt with Hood –Synthetic, quick-drying (Black Diamond Alpenglow Hoody).
Softshell Jacket - (Black Diamond Dawn Patrol Softshell Jacket).
Hiking/Softshell Pants - Synthetic, quick-drying (Black Diamond Alpine Hybrid Pant).
Mid-layer Insulated Top - Lightweight fleece or synthetic insulation (Black Diamond Diverge).
Waterproof Hardshell Jacket – Non-insulated, breathable, and waterproof jacket with a helmet-compatible hood (Black Diamond Recon Stretch Shell).
Waterproof Hardshell Pants – Non-insulated, breathable, and waterproof pants with a full-length side-zipper for putting on over boots in a storm. (Black Diamond Recon Stretch Pants).
Insulated Parka – Required, with a helmet-compatible hood and either down or synthetic insulation. (Black Diamond Mission Hoody).
Light-weight Gloves – Lightweight liner or softshell gloves for approaches and warmer conditions.
Medium-weight Gloves – Lightly insulated and weatherproof.
Heavy-weight Gloves/Mittens - Insulated and waterproof.
Warm Hat – Wool or synthetic, and snug enough to wear under a helmet.
Buff – Protect your face, ears, and neck from the wind, cold and sun.
Sun Hat – Baseball caps or packable sun hat (Mountain Shop Running Hat).
Personal Gear:
Lunch/Snacks – 6 or more snacks per day. Each snack should be around 150-250 calories.
Water Bottles – 2x 1-liter bottles or a 2-liter soft reservoir. (Nalgene, HydraPak Seeker 2L).
Glacier Glasses – Should be high-quality, dark, and have side-shields. (Julbo Camino Mountaineering Sunglasses).
Mineral Sun Screen – SPF 30 or higher.
Lip Balm – SPF 15 or higher.
Toilet Paper – Just in case! Your guide will provide WAG Bags.
Headlamp – For early starts, camp life, and emergencies (Black Diamond Storm 450 Headlamp).
Personal First Aid Kit – Moleskin, ibuprofen, aspirin, antacids, personal prescriptions, band-aids, and duct tape. (Adventure Medical Kits Ultralight/Watertight Medical Kit .5).
Technical Climbing Gear:
Mountaineering boots – Full shank, insulated, waterproof mountaineering boots are required for winter and spring mountaineering. (La Sportiva Nepal Cube GTX).
¾ shank, waterproof mountaineering boots are great for summer climbs in the North Cascades. (La Sportiva Aequilibrium).
Crampons – Must have steel front-points (Petzl Sarken Crampons).
Mono-point Ice Climbing Crampons - For ice and mixed climbing programs (Petzl Dart Crampons).
Ice Axe – 50 to 65 cm long. (Petzl Summit).
Ice Tools – For ice climbing trips, North Ridge of Mt. Baker, and Advanced Mt. Hood Routes (Petzl Quark).
Trekking Poles with Snow Baskets – Highly recommended for saving energy on the way up and your knees on the descent. (Folkrm Pahto Poles, Folkrm Kulshan Folding Poles).
Climbing Harness – Alpine-style (Black Diamond Couloir Harness).

Camping Gear:
Mountaineering Backpack – 55-65 liters (Hyperlite Ice Pack, Hyperlite Halka Pack).
Breakfasts – Oatmeal or breakfast bar that you can eat without much preparation early in the morning. A good breakfast should be about 250-350 calories (Bobo’s PB&J).
Dehydrated Dinners – Quick and easy meal for camp, just add hot water! Aim for a meal with 500 calories or more (Mountain House).

1 Gallon Ziploc bag – 2-3 are useful for trash and dirty clothes.
